Mananthavady: A youth travelling to Mysuru for a Railway Recruitment Board examination with his father was attacked by a wild elephant on the Punchavayal–Dasanakkara Road in the early hours of Tuesday.

The victim, Sathyajith, 22, son of Mohanan of Nedumkunnel House, Neervaram near Panamaram, sustained serious injuries. He was first admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH), Mananthavadi, before being shifted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital for advanced critical care.

According to a communique issued by South Wayanad DFO Ajit K Raman, the forest station received information about the incident around 5.45 am. A forest team reached the spot within 15 minutes and helped move the injured youth to GMCH, Mananthavady, in an ambulance due to the severity of his injuries.

The attack occurred while the youth and his father were walking along the road. The elephant was returning to Pathiri Forest after roaming through nearby plantations during the night. Medical College experts in Mananthavady recommended shifting the victim to Kozhikode as he had suffered spinal injuries, the communique added.

A team of forest officials led by Chethalath Forest Range Officer M K Rajeev Kumar is accompanying the ambulance to Kozhikode. Another team has been deployed in the Pathiri forest zone to drive the elephant back into the wild. The Forest Department will bear all treatment expenses for the injured youth, DFO Ajit K Raman said.
