Thrissur: Two officials of the Wadakkanchery Municipality were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe to renew a scrap shop licence. Clean City Manager Jithesh Kumar and contingent worker Santhosh were taken into custody by the Vigilance team.
The arrest followed a complaint filed by a resident of Kolazhy. He had applied online to renew the licence of a scrap shop operating in his building, but no action was taken even two weeks after the licence expired on November 14. When he visited the municipality office, he found that the application file was with Jithesh Kumar.
According to the Vigilance, Jithesh Kumar allegedly demanded ₹3,000 to approve the licence. The complainant then alerted Thrissur Vigilance DySP Jimpaul, who organised a surprise inspection at the municipality office.
Around noon on Wednesday, contingent worker Santhosh allegedly accepted the ₹3,000 bribe on behalf of Jithesh Kumar. The Vigilance team immediately caught both officials red-handed.
The two accused will be produced before the Thrissur Vigilance Court.
