Palakkad: A forest watcher was trampled to death by a wild elephant on Saturday during a tiger census in the Agali forest. The deceased has been identified as Kaalimuthu (52), a forest watcher from the Puthur forest station and a resident of Nellipathy.

The incident occurred when the team was returning after the census work. The group encountered a wild tusker, and while others managed to escape, Kaalimuthu was attacked and fatally injured.

The team, which included women officers from the Puthur forest station, had been stranded inside the forest the previous day. They had gone to the Kinakkorai region near the Tamil Nadu border for the tiger census and reportedly lost their way while returning to the station. Their food and water supplies had run out, but they were able to contact the forest station as their phones were still working. An RRT team was dispatched around 8 pm on Friday.

Kaalimuthu's body has been shifted to the Agali Government Hospital.
