Excise seize ₹1.11 cr hawala money at Muthanga checkpost ahead of local body polls

Wayanad: The Excise Department seized ₹1.11 crore in suspected hawala money from a car at the Muthanga checkpost on Friday night during intensified checks ahead of the local body elections.
Officials detained C K Muneer (38) of Noolpuzha after bundles of ₹500 notes were found hidden inside the car doors. The cash, totalling ₹1,11,32,500, and the vehicle were handed over to the Income Tax Department for further action.
The inspection was part of a special drive ordered by Wayanad Deputy Excise Commissioner A J Shaji. The operation was led by Excise Inspector Abijith Surendran, along with Sulthan Bathery Circle Inspector M K Sunil, Kalpetta Range Inspector G Jishnu, and other officers.
Shaji said checking at all inter-state checkposts will be tightened in the coming days to prevent the flow of unaccounted money or narcotics before the elections.
On November 20, the Mananthavady Excise team had detained five youths with ₹3.15 crore in hawala money, who were later handed over to Customs.
