The Idukki Fast Track POCSO Court on Wednesday sentenced a 41-year-old man to five years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl. Additionally, Judge Manju Vand fined him ₹30,000.

The court said that if the fine is not paid, the convict will have to undergo an additional six months of imprisonment.

The accused, Gireesh, from Chandyath House in Gandhi Nagar Colony, committed the offence during the 2024 Onam holidays when the child had returned home from her hostel.

A key factor in the trial was the testimony of Gireesh’s wife and daughter, which strongly supported the prosecution’s case. The judge also directed the District Legal Services Authority to provide appropriate compensation to the survivor.
