Kumily: The bus stand constructed by the Tamil Nadu government at Kumily, along the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border, has been opened to the public, fulfilling a long-pending demand of residents in the region.
People living in the area had been seeking a proper bus stand for over three decades. The new facility was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Rural Development Minister I Periyasamy, while Transport and Electricity Minister SS Shivasankar presided over the function.
In the absence of a bus stand on the Tamil Nadu side, buses had been halting along the roadside to pick up and drop off passengers, often leading to traffic congestion in the busy border area.
In 2023, the Tamil Nadu government sanctioned ₹7.5 crore for the construction of the bus stand on land where a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation workshop had previously functioned. The bus stand was built at a cost of ₹5.5 crore.
The newly constructed bus station, equipped with modern facilities, includes 18 commercial complexes, passenger waiting rooms, toilets, parking areas and a workshop. The ministers said the inauguration marked the fulfilment of a 30-year-old dream of the people of Kumily.
Theni District Collector Ranjit Singh, MLAs N Ramakrishnan and Maharajan, and officials from various departments attended the inauguration.
