Wayanad: A Fast Track Special Court in Kalpetta on Friday sentenced a man to 49 years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1.01 lakh for sexually assaulting a minor girl. The convict will have to serve an additional six months in prison if he fails to pay the fine.

The court found Vinod (31), a native of the Karinkanni tribal settlement near Thariyode, guilty under various provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Juvenile Justice Act. The sentence was pronounced by Judge K Krishnakumar.

The incident occurred in May 2020. The Padinjarathara police registered the case and initiated the investigation. Police said the girl was repeatedly sexually assaulted by the accused. The survivor, a school student and the younger sister of the accused’s wife, became pregnant and later gave birth to a baby.

The investigation was led by the Station House Officer, R Biju, who filed the charge sheet before the court.
