Thiruvananthapuram: The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has issued notices to quick-delivery platforms, including Blinkit, Swiggy, Zepto and BigBasket, citing instances of rash and negligent driving by their two-wheeler delivery riders.

According to the MVD, the notices have been served on the companies’ dark stores and delivery platforms after repeated violations of traffic rules by delivery personnel were observed. The department has given the companies 15 days to streamline their internal safety policies and align them with road safety norms, failing which, further legal action will be initiated.

The MVD said many online platforms promote deliveries within seven or 20 minutes, a practice that often leads to traffic violations and compromises road safety. Unsafe speeding, rash riding and the failure to wear safety gear were among the most common violations noted among delivery riders.

Officials said the pressure to deliver orders quickly and secure the next assignment to maximise earnings often forces riders to drive recklessly. In several cases, riders are given unrealistic deadlines by online stores, while customers are promised impractical delivery timelines to gain market advantage.

The department noted that such practices endanger not only the delivery riders but also other road users, with many motorists avoiding them for fear of accidents. The MVD warned that companies would be held accountable if corrective measures were not implemented within the stipulated time.
