Congress expels Chovvanur panchayat president after he accepts SDPI support

Thrissur: The Congress party has expelled Nidheesh AM, president of Chovvanur Panchayat, from the party after he accepted the support of the SDPI to assume office. Nidheesh was elected president with backing from the two SDPI members.
In the 14-member panchayat, the seat distribution stands at LDF – 6, UDF – 5, SDPI – 2, and NDA – 1. With the support of SDPI’s two members, UDF candidate Nidheesh AM secured seven votes and was elected president.
Following the development, the District Congress Committee (DCC) received direct instructions from the office of the Leader of the Opposition to request Nidheesh’s resignation. When he did not comply, the Congress party proceeded to expel him from the organisation.
