Edappal: Paddy fields across the Edappal region have come alive with the onset of the Makaram seasonal harvest, which has begun in several polder networks under Vattamkulam panchayat. Farmers are relying on harvesting machines from Tamil Nadu, hired at rates ranging between ₹2,400 and ₹2,600 per hour.

Many farmers here have grown the Ponmani variety of paddy, but say the yield has fallen short of expectations. The availability of straw is also reported to be low. Although the crop is ready for harvest in several fields, farmers in some polders will have to wait a few more weeks before harvesting can begin.

However, wild boar menace is forcing many farmers to harvest early. Wild boars move in groups and frequently enter the fields, causing extensive damage to the crop. To prevent losses, several farmers are keeping vigil overnight to drive these animals away. Harvesting in polders such as Shukapuram and Kulangara is expected to begin by next week.

Once harvesting is completed, the fields will serve as venues for festival celebrations, fireworks and related events.
