Dr Ashwin Mohanachandran, who was a junior resident doctor at KMCT Medical College, Mukkam, Kozhikode, has given life even after death through organ donation. The 32-year-old's liver, heart valve and corneas were donated after he was declared brain-dead on December 30, offering a new lease of life to multiple patients.

The liver was transplanted at KIMS Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, the heart valve at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, and the corneas at the Chaithanya Eye Hospital Research Institute, Thiruvananthapuram. His family said Ashwin had wanted his organs be donated after his death.

Dr Ashwin slipped and fell into a swimming pool while attending a friend’s wedding reception at a resort in Kakkadampoyil, Kozhikode on December 20. He was admitted to KMCT Medical College, Mukkam, and shifted to NS Hospital, Kollam, for advanced treatment on December 27.

Health Minister Veena George expressed her condolences to the family and thanked them for choosing organ donation despite their profound grief, calling the decision an inspiration to society. The harvesting of the organs and the coordination were carried out under the leadership of K-SOTTO. A green corridor was arranged with police assistance to transport the organs from Kollam to Thiruvananthapuram within an hour.
