Palakkad: A major renovation is underway at the Upper Sholayar Dam in Coimbatore district, where the dam's shutters are being replaced for the first time in 55 years. The ₹30-crore project commenced on Saturday and is progressing swiftly, officials said.

The Upper Sholayar Dam, located at the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, plays a crucial role in regional water management and serves as a key water source for the Parambikulam, Aliyar and Thirumoorthy dams.

The three shutters of the dam were installed when construction was completed in 1971 and have remained in continuous operation without any replacement since then.

Valparai is currently experiencing cool weather conditions. With water levels in streams and rivers having fallen sharply, the inflow into the dam has also reduced considerably. Public Works Department officials said the decline in inflow has made it possible to take up the renovation works, including the replacement of all three shutters.

The construction is scheduled to be completed before the onset of the southwest monsoon in June.
