Planned restriction on tourist buses to ease traffic logjam in Munnar not yet in place

The highly anticipated ban on large tourist buses entering Munnar's major sightseeing destinations will not be implemented during the upcoming Onam holiday season. The decision has been deferred due to the district administration's failure to finalise fare structures for alternative local transport, such as jeeps and autorickshaws, which tourists would rely on after deboarding the buses.
Decongestion plans hit a roadblock
In May, the Devikulam and Munnar panchayats joint committee decided to prohibit large tourist buses from entering heavily congested spots including Mattupetty, Kundala, Top Station, Rajamala, and Vattavada. The local authorities also planned to regulate other private vehicles through an e-pass system. The entire traffic management project was originally slated to be rolled out in the first week of August, well ahead of the festive rush.
Fare deadlock stalls implementation
However, with the administration failing to fix standard fares for local jeeps and autorickshaws, tourists would have been left stranded or at the mercy of unregulated local operators. Consequently, the authorities decided to hold off on the ban for now, allowing tourist buses to operate as usual during the peak Onam vacation period. While this offers temporary relief to tour operators, visitors should prepare for potential traffic bottlenecks at key viewpoints.
