Kerala is likely to receive rain or thundershowers at most places until August 29, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday. A thunderstorm warning is also in place for the state until August 25.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kannur and Kasaragod for Monday, warning of isolated heavy rainfall of 7-11 cm in 24 hours. Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam will remain under yellow alert on Tuesday.

Squally weather, with winds of 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph, is likely along and off the Kerala and Karnataka coasts and over the Lakshadweep area until August 25. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea in these areas during the period.

Despite heavy rain in several parts of the state in recent days, Kerala has recorded a 24% deficit in seasonal rainfall. From June 1 to August 23, the state received 1,255.5 mm of rain against the normal 1,659.4 mm.

Wayanad recorded the highest deficit at 52%, followed by Idukki (46%), Kollam (32%), Thrissur (28%), Palakkad (27%), Alappuzha (25%), Ernakulam (24%) and Malappuram (21%). Kannur, Kasaragod, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram recorded normal rainfall during the period.
