In a major relief to her family and community, a 32-year-old nurse from Kerala who was detained by Saudi police at Jeddah airport has been cleared of all charges and released from custody.

Philomina, a native of Ayyankolly near Sultan Bathery in Wayanad district, was taken into custody on 10 October while in transit from Bengaluru to Riyadh. Airport security officials intercepted her after discovering medicines in her luggage that are subject to strict regulatory controls in the kingdom. She was subsequently handed over to the Saudi Drugs Control division for further investigation.

Distress call and prompt intervention
The ordeal came to light after Philomina managed to send a brief voice message to her father Ravi and husband John while changing flights in Jeddah. In her message, she informed them that airport authorities had stopped her, confiscated her luggage, and requested her mobile phone. Communication was lost shortly afterwards, causing severe distress to her family in Kerala.

When Philomina failed to arrive in Riyadh, her family reached out to colleagues and officials at King Fahd Hospital, where she has been working as a nurse for the past three years. After confirming she had not reported for duty, her family alerted media outlets in Kerala and sought legal assistance through the Indian Embassy.

Innocence established after investigation
Co-ordinated inquiries by the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, the Consulate General of India in Jeddah, and local community representatives helped trace her location to police custody. Following a detailed examination of the case, Saudi authorities confirmed there was no criminal intent or irregularity, established her innocence, and ordered her immediate release.
