New Delhi: The Supreme Court is set to deliver judgments on several major cases heard by its Constitution Bench even as Chief Justice (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi is set to retire in a fortnight.

The CJI retires on November 17 and from November 4 till 15, the Supreme Court has eight working days. (Apart from Saturdays and Sundays, the apex court has holidays on November 11 and 12 too).

The five major verdicts that are expected:

Babri Masjid land dispute case: The most-awaited judgment is on the politically sensitive Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute case. Fourteen petitions were filed in the Supreme Court against the 2010 verdict of the Allahabad High Court to bifurcate the 2.77 acres of Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land in Ayodhya among Nirmohi Akhara, Ram Lalla and Sunni Waqf Board.

The hearings in the case were over on October 16.

Sabarimala women's entry: A five-member Constitution Bench lifted the ban on the entry of women inside the temple on September 28, 2018. Hearings concluded on February 28 on 56 petitions contesting the order. The court has to make it clear if it is willing to reconsider the ruling. If it decides to review the ruling, the court will hear afresh the petition filed by the India Young Lawyers Association questioning the ban on women's entry.

Rafale fighter jets' deal: The SC had on December 14, 2018, dismissed all petitions seeking a court-monitored CBI probe of the contract for Rafale fighter planes made by Dassault Aviation of France. Verdicts are expected on petitions seeking review of the ruling saying the ruling contained errors and relied on incorrect claims made by the government and action against officials who signed false affidavits.

Contempt of court case against Rahul Gandhi: The SC will also decide on the fate of a petition filed by BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi seeking criminal contempt proceedings against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for wrongly attributing to the SC his “chowkidar chor hai” remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Rafale case.

CJI's office under RTI: In January 2010, the Delhi High Court had ruled that the CJI's office would be open to RTI scrutiny. The SC secretary general appealed against this judgment and a five-judge Constitution bench headed by CJI Gogoi reserved its judgment in the case on April 4, 2019.
