US President Donald Trump on Friday said that India and Russia appeared to have been “lost” to China, following this week’s Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Beijing, where their leaders were seen alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest China. May they have a long and prosperous future together!” Trump wrote on his social media platform a remark that came days after Chinese and Russian leaders projected their vision of a new world order at the summit.

At the gathering in Tianjin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin championed “genuine multilateralism” while calling for alternatives to US-led global institutions. Xi announced financial incentives, including a proposed SCO development bank, $280 million in grants, and $1.4 billion in loans for member states.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined Xi and Putin in pledging to resolve bilateral differences, with the three photographed walking together in what analysts described as a rare display of unity. The summit brought together more than 20 leaders from across Asia and the Middle East.

Trump’s comments also came against the backdrop of his administration’s escalating trade war with China and a newly imposed 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods, which has sharpened grievances among SCO nations.
