Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20: Jharkhand dash Kerala's hopes

Krishna (Andhra Pradesh): Saurabh Tiwary's unbeaten 50 helped Jharkhand knock Kerala out of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 Championships here on Saturday. Jharkhand chased down Kerala's target of 177 losing five wickets in a must-win Group A match to qualify for the Super League.
Delhi, who beat Nagaland by seven wickets, also qualified from the group. Though both Jharkhand and Delhi ended up with 20 points from six games, the former topped the group on net run rate. Kerala finished third in the group with 16 points from six matches.
Kerala chose to bat on winning the toss and ended up with a respectable 176/6. Kerala were off to a brisk start with openers Vishnu Vinod (27) and Rohan S Kunnummal (34) adding 48 in six overs. Captain Sachin Baby (36), Vinoop Manoharan (31) and Salman Nizar (21 not out) too shone for Kerala.
Jharkhand opener Anand Singh (72) and one-drop batsman Virat Singh (46) added 91 for the second wicket to put the chase in control. But Jharkahand were in a spot at 143/5 in the 17th over. However, the left-handed Tiwary's 24-ball unbeaten 50 powered them home with five balls to spare.
Brief scores: Kerala 176/6 in 20 overs (Sachin Baby 36; Vikash Singh 2/34) lost to Jharkhand 180/5 in 19.1 overs (Anand Singh 72, Saurabh Tiwary 50 not out; Sandeeep Warrier 2/21).
