Jaipur: Rajasthan Royals opener Jos Buttler on Monday became the first victim of 'Mankading' in the history of the Indian Premier League when a desperate Kings XI Punjab skipper Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed the batsman in the controversial manner during their match here.

The dismissal seemingly derailed Royals’ run-chase as the hosts fell short of a target of 185 by 14 runs, finishing on 170/9 after 20 overs.

Buttler had to depart after a brilliant 69 off 43 when Ashwin, bowling his fourth over, whipped the bails off before delivering the ball and the England batsman was short of the crease.

As per the laws of the game, the third umpire declared Buttler out but such a dismissal had always raised eyebrows as it is within the laws but there is debate as to whether it is within the spirit of the game.

As expected Buttler seemed furious and had a heated exchange with Ashwin before leaving the field.

The dismissal - known as 'Mankading' after former Indian bowler Vinoo Mankad ran out Australia batsman Bill Brown in a similar manner in 1947.

It is the second time Buttler has been out in that fashion. It previously happened when he was run out by Sri Lanka's Sachithra Senanayake in an England One-Day International in 2014.
