Indian cricket star Virat Kohli gave a nine-year-old boy a valuable lesson in sport. Kabir, son of Kohli's U-17 and U-19 Delhi teammate Shawez Khan, met his celebrity 'uncle' at the Feroz Shah Kotla during a practice session ahead of Delhi's Ranji Trophy match.
Kabir asked Kohli what he needed to do to become an Indian cricketer. Kohli said: "You shouldn't have to be told to practice and train. You should remind yourselves to train daily. If anyone trains for an hour, you train for two hours. If anyone makes a 50, you make a 100. If one makes 100, you hit a 200. Whatever is the benchmark, do twice that. That's all."
Kohli also reminded the boy to enjoy his game as he exchanged pleasantries with his former teammate, the boy's father. Shawez reminisced about their young days playing for Delhi. "We had a bat contract with BDM and would go together to pick bats. We have been friends for long," he said.
Kohli hit the nets and trained with his Delhi teammates, including Navdeep Saini, who has also played for India. Kohli was offered the captaincy on his return to first-class cricket after 12 years. But he declined, letting Ayush Badoni continue in the position, just like Rishabh Pant did in the last match and Rohit Sharma did for Mumbai. Rohit opted to play under Ajinkya Rahane's captaincy against Jammu & Kashmir.
Kohli has been struggling for runs internationally, and the return to domestic cricket is expected to help him rediscover his form. Delhi will play Railways in the four-dayer starting Thursday. Delhi have had a difficult Ranji campaign and are sixth in the points table in Group D.
