Chennai: Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Wednesday announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League, ending a 16-year-long association with the tournament shortly after retiring from international cricket.

Ashwin, 38, shared the news on X, writing: “They say every ending will have a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my journey as an explorer of the game across various leagues begins now.” He thanked all franchises, the IPL, and the BCCI for the memories and support they provided over the years.

Ashwin retired from international cricket in December last year during India’s tour of Australia, finishing as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests with 537 scalps, behind Anil Kumble (619).

He made his IPL debut with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2009 and played his final IPL match in the yellow jersey in 2025, after returning to CSK for ₹9.75 crore. Across 221 IPL matches, Ashwin took 187 wickets at an average of 30.22 and scored 833 runs, with a highest of 50.

He was part of CSK’s title-winning teams in 2010 and 2011 and also played for Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals during his IPL career.
