Batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi found form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 with a powerful century against Maharashtra at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Tuesday.
The 14-year-old opener, known for his explosive batting, had struggled for runs in the event, scoring 14, 13 and 5 in Bihar's earlier outings. But he got going against the Prithvi Shaw-led side.
Suryavanshi's 108 not out off 61 balls powered Bihar to 176/3 in 20 overs. The left-hander made an unusually slow start, making 19 off 13 and reaching his half-century in a little over 30 balls. However, he accelerated after that, finishing with 7 sixes and as many boundaries, at a strike rate of 177.
Suryavanshi was also lucky to survive a few times as the Maharashtra fielders misjudged the flight of the ball and dropped a couple of catches. He held a 70-run partnership with Akash Raj (26) for the third wicket.
Suryavanshi had famously made his debut in the tournament last season at the age of 13, but has found himself to be a mainstay in the current Bihar set-up. In April, he became the youngest IPL centurion at 14, smashing a 38-ball 101 for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans.
Despite Suryavanshi's heroics, Maharashtra won by three wickets with an over to spare. Shaw top-scored with 66 off 30, while Niraj Joshi made 30.
