Pacer K M Asif produced a brilliant fifer as Sanju Samson-led Kerala caused a major upset in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 by defeating hot favourites Mumbai by 15 runs in Lucknow on Thursday.

Mumbai had won all four previous rounds before today, but stumbled in their chase of a 179-run target. Asif turned the game in Kerala's favour with three wickets in the 17th over.

The former Chennai Super Kings bowler dismissed Sairaj Patil, Surya Kumar Yadav and skipper Shardul Thakur in four balls. He returned to bowl the final over with Mumbai needing 17 and removed Hardik Tamore and Shams Mulani to complete a five-wicket haul (5/24).

Former Mumbai Indians spinner Vignesh Puthur claimed the prized wickets of Ajinkya Rahane (32) and Shivam Dube (11) to disrupt Mumbai's chase. Rahane and Sarfaraz Khan (52) had taken Mumbai to 84/2 in 9.2 overs.

Earlier, Sanju scored a 28-ball 46 to give Kerala a solid start, but the southern side yet again failed to reach 200. N M Sharafuddeen's 35 not out of 15 came in handy as Kerala posted their highest total in the event (178/5). Vishnu Vinod remained unbeaten on 43 off 40.

Kerala had lost to Vidarbha in the previous match after failing to capitalise on a good start. With three wins and two defeats, Kerala have 12 points, while Mumbai stay top of Group A with 16 points.
