Mumbai: Former Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down from his role as the Mumbai Indians head coach, the Indian Premier League (IPL) team said on Saturday. Mumbai Indians have confirmed Mahela’s departure.

"Mumbai Indians has been a very special part of my journey for over a decade now. The players, coaching team, the incredible support of the OneFamily and above all the fans have made this an experience I will always treasure.”

“Together, we have shared some unforgettable moments, overcome challenges and built something we can all be proud of. I wish the team every success in the years ahead,” the former Lankan skipper said.

With this, Jayawardene has ended his second stint at Mumbai Indians, the first being the team’s head coach between 2017 and 2022. The 49-year-old guided the side to three titles in this tenure before returning to replace Mark Boucher in 2025. Mumbai finished fourth in 2025 and lost in the playoffs. In 2026, he could not make much of a difference again, with the team ending the league at the bottom of the table.

"On behalf of the entire MI family, I want to thank Mahela for his immense contribution and unwavering commitment over the years,” added Nita Ambani.
