As Sunil Chhetri prepares for his last game in India colours against Kuwait, he got a special message from a Ballon d'Or winner.
Real Madrid and Croatia legend Luka Modric, a compatriot of Indian men's football team head coach Igor Stimac, posted a video message to Chhetri on the eve of the match. The video was shared by Stimac on his X handle.
"Hi Sunil, I just wanted to say hello and wish you all the best for your last game for your national team. Congratulations on your career. You're a legend of this game," Modric said.
The winner of the 2018 Ballon d'Or, who more recently lifted his sixth Champions League with Real Madrid, also had a message for the other members of the Indian national team. "I hope you make his last game special and unforgettable. Good luck and win for your captain. Best regards from Croatia," Modric said.
Chhetri, who has served the national team for 19 years, announced that he will retire after the FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Thursday (June 6). Chhetri, now 39, will be playing his 151st match for the country.
