Two Malayalis in India's touring squad for Asian Cup qualifier in Singapore

Khalid Jamil has placed his trust in defender Muhammed Uvais, picking the Malayali in India's 23-member squad for the AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Singapore on October 9.
At the CAFA Nations Cup, his first assignment since replacing Manolo Marquez, Jamil gave the left-back his India debut. Nilambur-native Uvais is expected to start in the important game in Singapore.
Interestingly, of the eight Malayali players who attended the national camp in Bengaluru, only two have been selected in the travelling squad. The other one is midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad, who joined the camp late.
Young striker Muhammed Suhail, who impressed at the AFC U-23 Asia Cup qualifiers, is on standby. Veteran striker Sunil Chhetri has been recalled and should start the match at the National Stadium in Singapore.
India and Singapore will play the return leg at Margao in Goa on October 14. After two rounds in the third round of the senior Asian Cup qualifiers, India are bottom of Group C with one point, while Singapore are top on 4 points. India drew goalless with Bangladesh, before losing 0-1 to Hong Kong. India are ranked 133 in the world, while Singapore are placed 159.
