Captain Mailson Alves's solitary goal in the first half helped Thrissur Magic upset holders Calicut FC in a Super League Kerala match at the EMS Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode on Saturday.

The Brazilian scored the winner with a header from a corner in the 36th minute. Calicut had failed to beat Thrissur across two meetings in the inaugural season.

Calicut, led by K Prasanth, began brightly but felt vulnerable from set pieces, as shortly after Alves' opener, Thrissur nearly made it 2-0 when Francis Addo made an acrobatic effort. Hajmal made a brilliant save to deny the Ghanaian.

Colombian Sebastian Rincon hit the post early in the second half as Calicut searched for an equaliser.

At the other end, Addo missed another opportunity to double the advantage.

Thiruvananthapuram Kombans had edged Forca Kochi 1-0 on Friday. Malappuram FC and Kannur Warriors will play the final game of round two at the Payyanad Stadium in Manjeri on Sunday.
