School athletics meet: Ernakulam retains c'ship, St George makes a comeback

Thiruvananthapuram: Ernakulam district has retained the championship at the 62nd school athletics meet held in the capital which saw the setting of two new national records and seven meet marks.
Ernakulam secured 253 points to lift its 13th trophy. Palakkad, which was placed second last time, is still at the same spot with 196 points. The host district Thiruvananthapuram is third with 101 points. The points scored by other districts are, Kozhikode 100, Thrissur 74, Kottayam 50, Malappuram 29, Alappuzha 28, Kannur 24, Kollam 24, Idukki 18, Pathanamthitta 12, Kasargode 8 and Wayanad 1.
Among schools, St George, Kothamangalam lifted the champion’s trophy for the 10th time with 81 points. It upstaged the last year’s champion Mar Basil School, Kothamangalam, which is now placed third. St George is finishing first after an interval of three years. The trophy is a fitting send-off to the coach of the school Raju Paul, who is retiring from service at the end of this academic year.
Kalladi HSS, Kumaramputhur is in the second position with 62 points and Mar Basil third with 50 points. In the fourth and fifth spots are Govt. Fisheries HSS, Nattika with 45 points and Parali HSS with 32 points.
Two national records on final day
The highlights of the final day of the meet were two national records. The previous two days were noted for the lack of records. While Akhil Kumar of Mundur HS cleared 15.24 m in triple jump for senior boys to break the first national record, M Jishna of KHSS, Kumaramputhur cleared 1.73m in high jump for senior girls to create another national mark.
In addition, another meet record was set on the final day. Chingiz Khan of St George, Kothamangalam completed 600 m sub-junior boys’ event in 1.25.06 minutes. He broke a ten-year-old record held by Lijo Mani.
Three triple gold medallists, two sprint doubles
Notable performers at the meet included C Abhinav of SAI, Thiruvananthapuram, who won gold in senior boys’ 100 and 200 m and Ancy Sojan of Nattika Govt. Fisheries HSS, Thrissur who also won gold in 100 and 200 m for senior girls. Their performances were witnessed on the final day. Abhinav is the son of Ratnakaran and Reesha of Pannippara, Irikkur in Kannur. Ancy had finished third in the long jump. She is the daughter of Sojan and Jancy, residing at Edappallil, Nattika.
Triple gold medals were won by Chengiz Khan of St George, Kothamangalam in sub-junior section, Adarsh Gopi in senior section (800, 1500 and 3000 m) and Sandra A S of Sacred Heart HSS, Thevara in junior category (100, 200 and 400 m).
