Capablanca Chess School to host FIDE-rated event offering Rs 25 lakh prize purse

Thiruvananthapuram: The Capablanca Chess School (CCS) in Thiruvananthapuram will host Chess Festival 2023 at the Jimmy George Indoor Stadium from March 30 to April 6.

CCS has announced the FIDE-rated tournament offering a total cash prize of Rs 25 lakh as part of its 7th-anniversary celebrations. Soorya Krishnamoorthy, Founder-Director of the Soorya Stage and Film Society will be the chief guest.

Competitions will be held in four different categories namely, Classic Open, Rapid Open, Blitz Open and Classic for those rated below 1600.

The classic open event will be held from March 30 to April 3, the rapid open on April 4 & 5 and the blitz event is scheduled for April 6. The event for those below 1600 Elo points will be held from May 12 to 14.

CCS has also announced the launch of the Capablanca Chess Foundation. CCS has informed the foundation will be a non-profit organization that aims to 'provide fellowships and sponsorship for deserving chess players, promote research in the area of chess, and advocate for chess as a social rehabilitation programme, especially in juvenile homes in Kerala'.
