Kasaragod boy Servan KC was the star on the inaugural day of the 65th state schools athletics championships held at the Government VHSS at Kunnamkulam in Thrissur on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old discus thrower was one of the two meet record makers on the day, the other being Abiram P of Palakkad in 400m.

Abiram smashed an 18-year-old meet record held by VB Bineesh as he clocked 48.06 seconds to finish first in the senior boys 400m. The previous record was 48.23 seconds set in 2005.

When attention shifted from the tracks to the field, Servan towered over his opponents. The student of GHSS Kuttamath obliterated the field with a massive 57.71 metre throw. Malappuram lad Ajith K managed a distant second with a best throw of 39.98m.

But Servan's achievement was even more special because, in the process of setting a new meet record, he erased the existing mark in the name of his elder brother Sidharth KC. Sidharth held the state school record of 53.34 metres since 2018.

Servan's father and trainer, Gireesh KC was present to witness the record. Gireesh, who runs a successful throws academy in Kasaragod, gave his little boy a warm embrace after the event.

At the end of the first day's events, Palakkad district were on top with 50 points followed by Malappuram (37) and Ernakulam (17).
