When D Gukesh lost three games in a day and Praggnanandhaa won 'Wimbledon of chess'

After not losing a game in over two weeks at the Tata Steel Masters, World Champion D Gukesh lost three games on the final evening in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. As a result, he lost the prestigious title, popularly called the Wimbledon of chess, from the cusps of clinching it.
Gukesh's first defeat of the evening came in the final round against compatriot Arjun Erigaisi. At the same time, Praggnanandhaa lost his game to Vincent Keymer, meaning he and Gukesh ended the 13-round Swiss event tied on 8.5 points. That meant the two were required to play a two-game blitz tiebreaker to decide the winner.
Gukesh started the tiebreakers with a win with white pieces. He only needed a draw in the second game to triumph, but Pragg showed nerves of steel and won that game to force the tiebreakers to continue.

But the next tiebreaker method used at Tata Steel Masters was called the Sudden Death, named after the infamous football penalty shootout method that was done away with more than two decades ago, in which one-off kicks are used to break a tie from spot kicks as opposed to a fixed number of attempts.
There was a caveat to it. The player drawing white in the sudden death had 30 seconds less on the clock. Pragg drew white, starting with 2.30 minutes, while Gukesh had 3.00 on his clock. But with a 2-second increment per move, Pragg could easily make up the lost time, and he did exactly that in the crunch game.
What mattered in that game of equals was nerves. Pragg held his nerves, but Gukesh slipped up. After accepting Gukesh's resignation with a handshake, Pragg walked off triumphantly. But the World Champion needed a moment to digest the defeat. He sat stoically while the arbiter helped rearrange the board. His emotions were on the brim.
Less than two months ago, Gukesh had been so close to experiencing the tiebreakers in his World Chess Championship match against Ding Liren. But he got lucky as Ding blundered in the dying moments of the decisive Game 14 and lost. This time, Pragg was more fortunate.
