World Chess Champion D Gukesh has jumped to the World No. 3 position for the first time. The 18-year-old Indian, who had been World No. 5 in the February rating list of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), has displaced American Fabiano Caruana and compatriot Arjun Erigaisi in the latest list released on March 1.
Gukesh improved 10 rating points to reach 2787 Elo points, while Caruana dropped 30 and Erigaisi, 24, to be placed fourth and fifth respectively.
Magnus Carlsen (2833) remains unmoved from the World No. 1 position he has held since 2014. American Hikaru Nakamura is ranked second with 2802 Elo points.
Five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand, who does not compete regularly these days, has slipped out of the top-10 to be placed 14th on 2743 Elo points. But a third Indian, R Praggnanandhaa, has climbed into the eighth spot on 2758 points.
Praggnanandhaa had a brilliant start to the year by clinching the title of Tata Steel Masters at Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands.
Gukesh climbed to the World No. 3 position in the live ratings following his performance in Tata Steel Masters, but the actual ratings were only reflected in the latest FIDE update. Gukesh was crowned the youngest World Chess Champion last December following a thrilling 14th game win over China's Ding Liren.
