World Champion D Gukesh continued his return to form in Norway Chess by defeating compatriot Arjun Erigaisi in round seven on Monday.

Gukesh had defeated World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen for the first time in classical chess on Sunday. The consecutive wins have pushed him above Carlsen into the second position, only behind Fabiano Caruana, who got the better of Wei Yi.

Gukesh started the tournament in Stavanger with losses to Carlsen and Erigaisi; now he has avenged his defeats to the two star players in just over 24 hours.

The consecutive wins should also help Gukesh gain valuable Elo points. In the June 1st update, Erigaisi displaced Gukesh from the World No. 3 position. The latest ranking also stripped Gukesh of his India No. 1 position, but he should be hoping to return to the top if he maintains his newly found form.

Meanwhile, Carlsen edged World No. 2 Hikaru Nakamura in armageddon tie-breaker after their classical game ended in a draw. Gukesh will play black against Nakamura in the eighth round on Tuesday. If he wins, it will be a rare double against the experienced American, whom he beat in round three.

In the women's section of Norway Chess, World Champion Ju Wenjun was in the lead after a round seven win over Sara Khadem. R Vaishali lost to Lei Tingjie, while Koneru Humpy lost to Anna Muzychuk in armageddon. Humpy was third, behind Muzychuk going into Tuesday's eighth round.
