The eighth round of Norway Chess gave positive results to three of the four Indian Grandmasters in the contest, with World Champion D Gukesh being the exception.

In the women's section, reigning Rapid world champion Koneru Humpy of India, claimed the top position for the first time in the event with victory over Sara Khadem.

The other stellar performer in the women's section was R Vaishali of India, who defeated World classical champion Ju Wenjun for the first time in her career. Vaishali drew with Wenjun in their classical battle before scoring a decisive win in the armageddon tie-breaker.

Meanwhile, in the open category of the event, Arjun Erigaisi of India defeated Fabiano Caruana to return to winning ways. Erigaisi had lost to compatriot Gukesh in the seventh round.

While three Indians in the competition scored wins, Gukesh couldn't get the better of World No. 2 Hikaru Nakamura with black pieces. Gukesh had defeated Nakamura with white pieces in the third round.

A third game in the men's event saw World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen lose to Wei Yi of China in armageddon. Carlsen blundered a knight in the tie-breaker.
