FIDE has teamed up with Norway Chess to introduce a multi-format tour to decide the World Combined Champion. The organisers announced that the ultimate champion will be decided across three disciplines: Fast Classic, Rapid and Blitz.

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich said in a press release that the existing World Chess Championship will continue. India's D Gukesh is the reigning World Chess Champion.

The full official tournament is set to start in 2027. However, a one-tournament pilot version will kick-off in the fall of 2026, said Norway Chess.

According to the organisers, Fast Classic will be different from the traditional classical chess that has a time control of about two hours. "Fast Classic is an innovation of classical chess, featuring a time limit as short as 45 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. This will receive a rating as classical chess," said the press release.

It would be interesting to see how World No 1 Magnus Carlsen approaches the event, considering he has been staying away from FIDE's classical world championships since 2021, when he secured his fifth title. Norwegian Carlsen is the reigning World Blitz Champion, a title he famously shared with Ian Nepomniachtchi.
