World No 1 Magnus Carlsen has endorsed an online fundraiser to set up the Naroditsky Memorial & Fellowship Endowment in honour of US Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, who died suddenly last month, aged just 29.
Carlsen shared the fundraising link from Naroditsky's club, Charlotte Chess Center (CCC). According to CCC, the goal of the donation drive is to raise $4,000,000.
"To honor his legacy, the Naroditsky Family, in partnership with the Charlotte Chess Center and Charlotte Chess Center Foundation, has established the Naroditsky Memorial and Fellowship Fund, a lasting endowment that will celebrate Daniel’s life, his love for teaching, and his impact on the global chess community for generations to come," posted CCC.
Naroditsky was popular among chess fans, mainly as a commentator and streamer, and was a specialist in speed chess. Carlsen recently said that he played online speed games with Naroditsky on his wedding night.
Naroditsky had been subjected to cheating allegations by former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik. Naroditsky was allegedly upset by the accusations. FIDE recently submitted a complaint to its Ethics & Disciplinary Commission against Kramnik on the repeated public allegations.
Kramnik has been on overdrive to apparently clear his name by putting out social media posts, in which he claims the late American GM had been upset by losses to weaker players.
