A notebook has found on the railway track post the fire incident in the Kozhikode train, in which the name of the supposed owner Shahrukh Saifi and his details were written.
The police have on Monday constituted an 18-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to unravel the mystery.
The suspect is still absconding and the police say he travelled from Kannur to Mangalore and then to Delhi, after committing the crime.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also begun a preliminary investigation into the fire incident .
The shocking incident which claimed three lives took place in Kozhikode on Sunday night.
The forensic team said they would only be able to provide more information on whether it was petrol the accused poured on other passengers after a chemical test.
Saif, who jumped off the train and fled after the incident, is understood to be working as a labourer in Kozhikode and the police probe team is now trying to crack the case and apprehend him by getting in touch with his contacts.
Ten minutes after the train left Kozhikode station, an arsonist sprayed petrol on a few passengers in D1, an unreserved coach with 103 seats, and set them on fire.
The police have released the sketch of the suspect, prepared with inputs from the main witness Razak.
He also expressed concern over the safety of the train passengers in the state.
