Kerala's robust surveillance of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) triggered an investigation into the death of a 23-year-old patient at a private hospital in Malappuram.
Till now, 16 samples have been tested negative.
Five wards in two panchayats of Malappuram have been declared containment zones.
Health Minister Veena George said samples from 13 individuals on the contact list have been sent for testing.
The youth visited the Nilambur Police Station, two local clinics and two hospitals between September 6 and 9.
Health officials have collected samples from these individuals, which will be sent to a laboratory in Kozhikode for testing.

Earlier, the National Institute of Virology, Pune, confirmed that the 23-year-old from Naduvathu near Wandoor died of Nipah.
Health Minister Veena George said 16 committees had been formed per the Nipah protocol to monitor and prevent the situation on Saturday.
The 23-year-old passed away at a private hospital in Perinthalmanna on Monday.
