Kerala coastal districts have a red alert until August 20 due to high-energy swell waves from the southern Indian Ocean, causing potential flooding.
Swell surges or freak waves can cause intense winds, coastal erosion and flooding.
While Tsunami waves can reach heights of 30 to 40 meters, 'Kallakadal' waves can reach a maximum height of 11 meters.
The centre has warned people, especially those for recreational purposes, from venturing into beaches as the high waves and the backwash waves are powerful enough to sweep them into dangerous depths.
