Travelling is synonymous with shoots for many actors, and at times, specific locations leave a lasting impression on them, long after the cameras stop rolling. Kalki fame actor Anna Ben has shared glimpses from a month-long shoot in Auli, Uttarakhand, which was apparently a trip marked by 'Unforgiving weather, little sleep, and lots of hearts beating for a very special film,' according to her. Her photos capture the pristine snowfalls and stunning landscapes of the region, offering a rare peek behind the scenes of her movie journey.
Located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, adjoining the Himalayas, Auli is often called the skiing capital of India. Its climate, scenic beauty, and peaceful atmosphere make it a draw for visitors. Despite the cold and snow, tourists rarely stay indoors, drawn by facilities for skiing, camping, and other winter adventures.
The skiing paradise of Garhwal
While Auli can be visited year-round, January to March, when temperatures plunge, is the best time to experience skiing at its peak. For those who wish to enjoy the Nanda Devi mountain ranges under pleasant weather, October to January offers ideal conditions. The nickname `skiing paradise of Garhwal' says it all. Auli’s slopes, blanketed in snow for up to five kilometres during winter, are perfect for skiing. Adventure enthusiasts can also indulge in paragliding, bungee jumping, jungle safaris, and mountain biking. A highlight is the cable car from Joshimath to Gorson, stretching 4 kilometres and India’s longest of its kind, offering panoramic Himalayan views.
Snow-covered trails
Auli is also a haven for trekkers to the Himalayas. Treks to peaks like Nanda Devi, Kamet, and Mana Parvat indeed provide thrilling experiences. Winter trails are snow-covered, while summer unveils lush meadows, pine forests, and sweeping mountain vistas. Gurson Bugyal, near Auli, is renowned for its unpolluted environment and starlit night skies that leave visitors spellbound.
Accommodation in Auli caters to families, solo travellers, and groups. The Uttarakhand Tourism website lists recognised homestays, and if options in Auli are limited, nearby Joshimath offers plenty of lodging choices.
The local cuisine
Auli’s indigenous Garhwali cuisine is another delight. Local staples include dal curries, leafy vegetables, and specialities like the mutton dish Kachmoli, the sweet Bal Mithai, and Sigori, a traditional snack wrapped in leaves.
The region is well connected by road, with buses and taxis operating from Rishikesh, Pauri, Rudraprayag and Chamoli. Inter-state buses also run from Delhi’s Kashmiri Gate. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant in Dehradun, 286 kilometres away, with taxis available to reach Auli. The closest railway station is in Rishikesh, 264 kilometres away.
