'Arikomban's story is going to be a movie soon. Are you part of it?'
'Ya and I'm growing a tusk for it now!'
Remember this funny interaction between actor Tovino Thomas and the Mollywood paparazzi, around the time the infamous tusker Arikomban was captured? Well, whether he has an elephant-inspired movie coming up or not, the actor surely seems besotted with some mighty jumbos. Recently, Tovino shared a handful of envy-inducing photos taken at Kenya's Amboseli National Park, known for its free-ranging African elephants. The park, which has Africa's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, as its backdrop, is also known as 'land of the giants' for the presence of its large bull elephants with long tusks.
He captions, one of the photos clicked with an approaching elephant, thus: 'In the Land of Super Tuskers - The Realm of Giants. Meet TJ of Amboseli National Park!' A few of his fans have commented on the photos, noting that, given that Tovino is from Thrissur, known for the iconic Thrissur Pooram that brings together the best of Kerala's elephants, his love for the jumbos is not surprising. Tovino has also clicked a handful of photographs with the Maasai people, an iconic nomadic tribe living in Amboseli. They are known for coexisting with wild animals in their traditional villages, which tourists can visit.
Why Tovino is in Amboseli now
The best time to visit Amboseli National Park is from June to October, when animals gather in the park's swamps for water and food. The landscape here is also dry this season, unlike April-May, when it experiences a rainy season.
In the peak dry season that's going on now, more than 1,500 elephants can be spotted marching in their family lines to the wetlands of the park. Visitors get to see them bathing, feeding, having fun and more. They can also see zebras, cape buffaloes, gazelles, cheetahs, lions, and hyenas around water sources. Tourists interested in photography also make use of this season, as this is when Kilimanjaro's snow-capped peaks can be captured at their best.
