Paithalmala is about 58 kilometers away from Kannur. One could take a bus from Thaliparamba via Kudianmala. Bus services are available till Pottanplavu Vanchiyamkavala. You could either walk or hire a private vehicle to reach the entrance which is 2 kilometers away. Ticket has to be purchased to enter the beautiful forest. The 2 kilometer long trekking through the dense forests would be an exhilarating experience. The forest path paved with stones lead you to a magical world where you could enjoy the unending charm of lush greenery. You could even spot some rare avian species. The cool water in the small rivulets that flow through the woods is refreshing.

Misty magic

The view of the sun shine seeping through a canopy of trees is simple enchanting. It is, however, just a preview of the unending sights that await you. As the mist retreats, your eyes could feast on the mesmerizing sights of the verdant hills. During the monsoon, the grass blades here grow as high as 5 feet. Here, you would find a path that diverts to the left and right.

Those who are interested to trek further can take the path to the right, which leads to the highest point of Paithalmala 5 kilometers away. It is believed that Vaithalkon, the legendary tribal king, had lived here. The remnants of the buildings and other structures from those times could be spotted at this point.

Meanwhile, taking the path to the left, would lead you to the lush green meadows and further to the watch tower. There is a fresh water lake near the watch tower which never dries up. Keep exploring to reach the tip of the mountain from where you can enjoy the breathtakingly beautiful panoramic view of the Kannur district and also the Valapattanam River and the forest areas of Coorg. However, there is a chance that the chilly mist may block these spectacular views.

One could spend an amazing time at Paithalmala from 9 in the morning to 4 in the evening. The ticket costs Rs 30 per person. Carry your own snacks and drinking water. However, plastic isn't allowed inside the forests. You could enter Paithalamala from Manjapullu via Kappimala. There are many resorts near Paithalmala.
