Kerala's first transgender canteen would be inaugurated at the Palakkad civil station on December 13. The canteen would be run by Oruma transgender Kudumbasree unit, supported by the social welfare department, district panchayat and the Kudumbasree Mission.

A team of ten transgender persons, registered at the social welfare department, is responsible for managing the canteen. The authorities have already provided training for them. Besides, the district panchayat has allotted special funds.

The authorities hope that an enterprise like this would be an encouragement for the transgender community. Around 22 transgender persons have so far registered at the social welfare department in the district. Six more applications are under consideration. This would be the first transgender canteen in the state run with help and support of the government.
