Athavanad: Even though visitors have been flocking to the area to see the beautiful Ayyappanov waterfalls, the lack of proper safety arrangements is worrying many. Tourists from both inside and outside the state come here to enjoy the waters that cascade through the tall rocky cliffs. During the monsoon, the water from the nearby fields flows into the waterfall, making it incredibly attractive.

The lake beneath the waterfall too is a favourite spot for visitors. However, the path that leads to this area is quite precarious as the safety fences that were installed here cannot be found anymore. Besides, the warning boards too have disappeared.

Even though the police often conduct awareness programs and give safety instructions, they are ignored by the tourists as soon as the policemen leave. Proper safety features have to be arranged in this area to make it more tourist-friendly. Moreover, guards too need to be appointed.

Years ago, a student died in an accident after a giant rock had fallen off the cliff here. Immediate measures should be taken in order to avoid such incidents. The people of the locality say that elected representatives should interfere immediately to make the waterfall and the surrounding area safe. The Ayyappanov waterfall is located at Vettichira – Kattilangadi Road.
