The construction of Kerala’s first eco-friendly astro tourism project has begun at Manjampothikunnu in Kasaragod. Kasaragod was chosen as the spot for this around five years ago, considering the region has the least pollution required for such a tourism project. It was allotted a budget of Rs 4.97 crore, and the foundation stone was laid during the last phase of the first Pinarayi government. Meanwhile, the musical fountain and telescope were dropped from the original plan due to a shortage of land for the project, which was overseen by the district tourism promotion council. The tourism director had then submitted a revised proposal of Rs 3.60 crore to the government.
A working group meeting of the concerned department convened in October 2022 to scrutinise the revised proposal and approved the eco-sensitive astro-tourism project in Manjampothikunnu. A gate house, main building, rainwater harvesting system, garden with steps, walkway, interlock, fencing, landscape., children’s play area, solid waste disposal, facilities, drinking water, solar lamps, selfie point and CCTV cameras are some of the facilities that will be arranged as part of the project.
The project is expected to be completed by September of this year. Meanwhile, visitors can reach Manjampothikunnu via Kalyan Road Muthappanthara and Anandashram Road. Many visitors visit this place regularly to enjoy the beauty of the hills and the nearby Veeramaruthi temple. The authorities hope more people will reach the area when basic infrastructure and other facilities are arranged.
