Remember an enchanting temple pond featured in the recent film Narayaneente Moonnanmakkal? Or the one in the cult film Sargam, released in the 90s? A 200-year-old sacred pool made of laterite stones, blending well into its forest green environs, the Kottayil Siva Temple pond at Kozhikode's Muchukunnu has been a hit on social media in recent times. Wanderlusters sans generations love the space for its otherworldly allure, serene atmosphere and clear waters.
What to see
The ‘kaavu’, or sacred grove, of the Muchukunnu Kottayail Siva Temple, is one of Kerala’s 22 officially recognised virgin forests listed by the Forest Department. Spanning 9.46 acres, this lush green sanctuary is home to rare species of plants, animals, butterflies, snakes, and more. Jointly preserved by the Forest Department and the temple, the grove stands as a living reminder of Kerala’s deep-rooted ecological and spiritual heritage.
As you approach the shrine, a stone wall and entranceway greet you, flanked by pillars sculpted from single blocks of rock. From here, a narrow path veers left, leading you gently into the forest. This serene trail, shaded by trees, ends at the temple’s famed pond — a vision of timeless beauty.
Step onto the carefully placed triangular stone steps, built entirely without cement. These steps lead you to the pond’s cool, green waters, dappled with the reflections of overhanging trees. Colorful fish swim gracefully in the clear depths, completing the peaceful scene. According to temple authorities, the pond, constructed in the style of the Guruvayoor Temple pool, was built over 200 years ago by Mankottil Chathukutty Nair, using traditional techniques that still endure.

Muchukunnu temple pond has become a popular photoshoot spot of the state in the recent times.
