A majestic tunnel featured in the song 'Manikyachirakulla,' in the Aashiq Abu film 'Idukki Gold,' has been beckoning tourists to Kerala's Idukki district for many years. The 6 km-long 'Anchuruli tunnel' and waterfall are unique, memorable sights that tourists love to experience and capture on their devices for social media. In fact, the spot has a lot more to offer than what one gets to see on the screen, be it in movies or social media. The region's name translates to 'five urulis' (a type of traditional cooking vessel), and its credit goes to local tribal communities, who were apparently inspired by the five hillocks that become visible when the water level recedes.

The iconic tunnel
Constructed in 1974 by contractor Pailey Pillai from Kolenchery, the Anchuruli tunnel was built for Kerala State Electricity Board by simultaneously drilling through rock from both ends. Its purpose was to divert water from Erattayar Dam to Idukki Reservoir. Located beneath the tallest hill in the Kalyanathandu range, the tunnel has a diameter of 24 feet. Apparently, about 22 workers lost their lives during its construction!

The tunnel officially opened in 1980. Its operation is seasonal and the water flow within will differ based on reservoir levels and rains. When water levels are low, the tunnel can be accessed from the other side, offering a mesmerising view of the water cascading from the Idukki Dam through the tunnel into the reservoir. In monsoon, it creates a 50-foot-high waterfall.

Safety considerations
While the tunnel is an engineering marvel, it lacks proper safety systems. Officially, entry into the tunnel is prohibited, even when there is no water flow. It also has many slippery surfaces and uneven terrains. Although there are warning boards and fencing, many visitors disregard safety advisories and attempt to descend directly to the waterfall below the tunnel. For safety, tourists should observe the tunnel and waterfall from a safe distance, especially during the monsoon season.
