Kerala's Ponpally transforms dump yard into tourism spot: What to see

The people of Kerala's Ponpally in Kottayam feel pride and joy as they see their clean roads and the enchanting fields. It is their hard work and resolve that turned this place, which was once a dump yard, into a beautiful spot where they can spend evenings peacefully. The 'Kadavu' (ghat) near the Ponpally bridge is called 'Pontheeram,' where the first phase of village tourism has been completed. MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan will inaugurate the project on Sunday at 5 pm.
What 'Pontheeram' offers
Benches and walkways have been constructed for the visitors to relax and enjoy sunset views here. Besides, grill fences on the bank of the lake and CCTV cameras are also installed here for safety.
The Pontheeram project was planned by 12 residents in the locality. Panchayat vice president Rajani Santhosh said that 44 people contributed amounts ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 500 for implementing the project. A boat jetty built in Ponpally at ward 17 of the gramapanchayat was useless and was covered in thickets and bushes. People threw waste here, turning the jetty into a dump yard. But a public committee was formed to revive the boat jetty and transform it into a green spot. The village tourism project was envisaged to transform such spots into beautiful, clean places where people can gather. Now, the samiti is planning to start boat and coracle rides on the lake too.
