Thrissur: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation's new open-top double-decker bus has arrived as a New Year gift for Thrissur, marking the launch of the city’s first such service. The trial run of the double-decker KSRTC bus officially began on Wednesday.
Revenue Minister K Rajan and Transport Minister KB Ganesh Kumar, with several public representatives, officially flagged off the trial run.
The bus departed from Ramanilayam, passed through Swaraj Round, Mannuthy, and Kuttanellur, and reached the Puthur Zoological Park. After a short ride inside the park premises, it returned to the city.
The new electric double-decker bus, costing ₹1.5 crore, is expected to begin regular service in January. The project was funded through the initiative of Transport Minister KB Ganesh Kumar. Plans are also underway to introduce electric KSRTC buses for service at the Puthur Zoo.
Addressing the flag-off ceremony, Minister Rajan said the service will offer residents and visitors a unique way to experience the scenic beauty of Thrissur city. Transport Minister Ganesh Kumar added that the government will take steps to relocate overhead cables and power lines to ensure smooth operation and will explore adding more tourist attractions along the route.
The “Thrissur City Sightseeing” service will start from the city, circle Swaraj Round, pass through Jubilee Mission and Kuttanellur, travel to the Puthur Zoological Park, and return to the town.
This marks the first time a top-open double-decker bus has been introduced in Thrissur. Authorities expect the new service, along with the zoo’s opening, to give a major boost to tourism in both Thrissur and Puthur.
MLA P Balachandran, Thrissur Corporation Mayor MK Varghese, District Panchayat President VS Prince, and several other officials and public representatives joined the inaugural ride.
