A few days ago, the Idukki Dam opened to tourists for visits and boat rides on Idukki Lake. Apart from locals, visitors are arriving from various parts of the state and neighbouring states as well to experience it. The Forest Department has arranged opportunities for tourists to also enjoy the scenic beauty of the Cheruthoni dam and forest views by boating on the beautiful Idukki Lake throughout the year. Boating is arranged from 9 am to 5 pm.
The fee is Rs 178 for adults and Rs 85 for children below 12 years. The travel time is half an hour. Currently, there is one boat that can carry eighteen people. The journey, which starts from Vellappara Boat Jetty, primarily offers views of Idukki and Cheruthoni dams, and 'Vaishali' Cave.
What is 'Vaishali' cave?
It is a massive cave in the Edamalayar forest. Part of the 1989 movie was shot in this cave. It is located near the Edamalayar dam. The 25-foot-tall cave also has trees above it.
Boat crew members will accompany the passengers and explain the history of the Idukki project from its inception. Wild animals, including elephants, can also be seen during the journey. Although the project has existed since 2015, it has not received enough publicity, so not many tourists have been coming here. However, Wildlife Sanctuary officials say the situation has now changed. The past season has seen more tourists than the capacity could accommodate. Tickets can be purchased from the counter opposite Paremmavil Kolumban Samadhi, and the ride can be started after reaching the boat jetty.
